French Bread Made Easy
INGREDIENTS:
1 pkg. dry yeast
1 tbsp. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. shortening
4 c. sifted all purpose flour
DIRECTIONS:
Sprinkle yeast into 1/2 cup warm water; stir until dissolved. Place sugar, salt and shortening in large bowl. Add 1 cup warm water. Stir until dissolved. Add yeast mixture; mix well. Add flour. Stir dough with spoon 5 times at 10 minute intervals. Turn onto lightly floured board. Shape into 2 balls. Let rest for 10 minutes. Roll each ball into 10 x 8 inch rectangle. Roll from long side as for jelly roll. Seal edges. Place rolls on greased cookie sheet side by side. Slash top of rolls diagonally 6 times. Cover with towel. Let rise for 1 1/2 hours. Bake at 400 degrees for 1/2 hour.
